The College Essay Kick Start | June 22, 24, & 26
hosted by the OHS Writing & Tutoring Center
In this 3-day course, offered by the Writing & Tutoring Center, rising seniors will work with writing instructors to understand the purposes of and opportunities presented by the essay portion of the larger college application. They will receive guided instruction in the genre (college application essay/a.k.a. The Common Application) and attend collaborative and individual writing sessions.
Each of the class meetings (Monday, Wednesday, and Friday) will be devoted to explaining and understanding the elements of an effective application essay. Students will meet collectively with an instructor to read prompts, undertake activities, watch videos, perform writing exercises, and read and discuss sample essays. From June 24-June 29, writing instructors will offer individual writing consultations. By the end of the course, students will have produced initial drafts of college essays to work from and will have received expert feedback on their writing.
The enrollment form will be sent to full-time rising seniors in May and upon enrollment, students will have a choice of indicating their preferred section time: 8:30-10 a.m., 1:30-3 p.m., or 5:15-6:45 p.m.
