What is the Pomodoro Method?
The Pomodoro Method, sometimes called the Pomodoro Technique, is a time-management strategy that’s designed to balance time spent working with adequate breaks. Though it may seem more productive just to power through with no breaks, this isn’t really true – your brain needs time to absorb what it’s learned and refocus. Putting in the most hours doesn’t always translate to accomplishing the most. The Pomodoro Method helps to maximize efficiency by both working for adequate time and taking adequate breaks.
How does it work?
The Pomodoro Method consists of “Pomodoros,” which are 25-minute periods of concentrating on a particular task. It’s helpful to couple this with goal setting, where you set out to accomplish a particular (reasonable) amount of work within those 25 minutes.
After each 25-minute Pomodoro is a 5-minute break, allowing your mind to take a brief rest so it can focus better. We highly recommend getting away from your computer, doing some exercise, art, or whatever helps your brain to disconnect and recharge. After 4 Pomodoros, it’s time for a longer break.
Repeat this process as many times as you want!
How can I implement the Pomodoro Method in my daily life?
There are many ways to do this! The simplest way is to look at a clock or set a timer on your phone or computer for 25 minutes, then another for a 5-minute break, and so on.
However, you don’t have to do it yourself. There are many Pomodoro timers online which do this for you, and some have other added features, like music.
Also, if you have a Windows computer, you can use the built-in “Focus sessions” feature in the Clock app. Though it doesn’t follow the Pomodoro Method exactly, it’s the same idea of having a period of work and a period of rest, and it will calculate the work and rest based on how long, in total, you want to focus for. It will also put on your “do not disturb” setting, thus stopping app notifications during this time to help you focus.
